Meet Mente Participants: Sarah & her successful journalism internship

Sarah lived in Buenos Aires for 4 months in a student residence here with Mente. It has been a pleasure to get to know Sarah and to enjoy her company on various Mente events. Sarah loved living at Eldita’s home, one of Mente’s student residences, for its convenient location, her housemates with whom she became friends, and Eldita’s food. ‘It is better than any restaurant in Buenos Aires. I am going to have to get used to small portions again when I go home’ Sarah laughed.  Sarah is sad to return to England but looking forward to her plans for school for when she returns. Before she leaves us to go on a trek from Salta, Argentina to Cusco, Peru, and finally to return home to London, we wanted to take the time to share with you all the work that she has done during her internship here in Buenos Aires.

Sarah is a journalism intern at the Bubble, a digital media company that analyzes current events in Argentina, Latin America, and internationally from an Argentine view point in English.  The company has personality, and a cynical one at that, allowing each of its writers to add their own voice to their work. It is full of tongue and cheek comments about current events and has a snarky charm that makes their articles more interesting than your standard news source. The Bubble claims to provide a “no bullshit” approach to the news, as opposed to the more mainstream, diluted news outlets that we have access to.  During her relatively short time at the Bubble Sarah has written on a number of topics including Buenos Aires music festivals, film reviews, updates on political events, nearby travel reviews, and upcoming cultural events.   The company supports its writer´s interests and strengths, identifying what they are good at writing and giving them topics that are complimentary.

Although she is an avid reader and plans to go on to study literature, before Sarah’s internship she did not have any formal experience with writing.  Now, at a mere 18 years old, Sarah has published 36 articles for The Bubble.  She gained a lot from her experience, working mainly with people in their 20s and 30s with years of experience.  The Bubble offers workshops to their writers such as how to manage WordPress and various other social media sites. The company recently created a newsroom space where its employees chat, discuss current events, and help each other with what they are working on.  Sarah really appreciated her experience there, ‘I hope I can find a place to work that is as much fun as this one’ Sarah explained.  ‘It can take a lot of time to do the research and get all of the details straight’ Sarah described the learning curve ‘but people were always there to help me with any questions that I had’.

Sarah is a perfect example of what an Internship here in Buenos Aires can yield with some elbow grease and determination. Sarah uses this determination not only in her approach to her work but also to her personal life.   During her stay here Sarah has taken advantage of the night life, enjoying that this city has to offer.   She has taken trips to Uruguay, Bariloche, and Patagonia and is planning more travels this month.  We have nothing but good things to say about Sarah and are excited to see where her experience, new language skills, and wanderlust bring her in the future.
