Mente goes on a daytrip to Tigre!

-

One of the perks of being a participant at Mente Argentina is that we organize Mente Tours & Activities!
Check out previous blog posts for a better breakdown of Mente Events. This is our way of staying connected with Mente participants and overall have a great time exploring Buenos Aires. If you are thinking of coming to study, volunteer or do an internship abroad in South America, think no further! In Buenos Aires you won’t feel alone, because every week we offer activities for participants to meet each other and get to know the city. In Buenos Aires, there is never a dull moment, but we left the city to go on a day trip to Tigre.  DSC06726

Tigre is located about a hour train ride outside of Buenos Aires city, and it is one of the most important tourist attractions for people visiting Buenos Aires. Tigre is on the Paraná Delta of lazy waterways and islands, a group of streams whose sedimentary waters empty into the  Río de La Plata, the widest river in the world! The delta is an endless labyrinth where locals live and thousands of visitors pass through everyday. We wanted to see what that was all about!DSC06734

The main attraction in Tigre is, essentially, to get out of the city of Tigre! The thing to do is on the river delta – We took a ride around the delta on a double-decker boat and discovered how people live here! The islands and grasslands, combined with the stunning homes blew us away. DSC06751

It’s impressive to look at the paths of the canals, taking a boat tour around the Tigre Delta offers a unique sense of actual life in this little town. You get to see yacht and kayaking clubs, waterfront houses on stilts, the market, and the house (now museum) of former Argentinian president Fausto Domingo Sarmiento (buried in Buenos Aires at the Recoleta Cemetery), who encourage people to make their homes there and wrote many important pieces of Argentine literature while living there. DSC06744

After our boat tour, we explored the town and the famous Puerto de Frutos, a waterfront open market full of souvenirs, furniture and gaucho-inspired leather goods. During the weekends, it’s a great place to spend the day with friends.  We walked for a while and then had a nice lunch. It is definitely refreshing to leave city life for a day – you come back to Buenos Aires and truly get to appreciate the hustle of the city.DSC06791

Visiting Tigre is definitely a trip to take if you come to Buenos Aires. There’s also an amusement park, Chinatown, a big casino, and country and sports clubs. Tigre has everything for everyone! Who knew a small town like this could be so cool!

Overall, we had a great time at Tigre and we were glad to host this Mente Event for our participants!
