Troy from the U.S. joined us in 2019 for our Culinary Arts Degree Program. Here is his story…
My greatest motivation for enrolling in the Mente culinary arts program was to expand my value as a global citizen. At twenty eight years old, I may be on the older end of your typical applicants, but undoubtedly, have similar goals. After graduating University, I went straight to work in the field of event production and stage design. It has been exciting work and the lifestyle associated here in southern California is one of security and comfort. Unfortunately, it is easy to get lulled to sleep in such a homogeneous environment and I have felt recently a narrowing of my perspective.
I’m came to Argentina (and afterward to many other countries) on a mission to expand my horizons and build new skills. There is nothing more satisfying than putting in tremendous effort attempting to do something that feels weird, awkward, or difficult; and seeing results compound little by little until, almost imperceptibly, you become proficient.
Both the Spanish language and the Culinary Arts have always had an exotic appeal, something that reaches deep down to the child-like intrigue within. I can’t imagine anything more fulfilling than discovering another culture, well beyond the superficial level, centered around the one thing that unites the whole world: food!
So while my end-goal is (probably) not to be a professional chef, I believed this program will be extremely beneficial to growing my love of cooking, nutrition, and South American culture.
