Why Intern in Buenos Aires with Mente Argentina – Nicole, USA

Nicole from the U.S. joined us for several months between 2018 and 2019 for our Internship Program where she worked at two different internships. For the first few months she worked at an international relations organization and then spent the last few months working at a photography studio and event center. Here is her story…

Working with the Mente Argentina program has been an enriching opportunity for not only my long term educational goals, but also my professional goals. I currently major in Global Studies with a concentration in Culture, Media, and Arts, and I have two minors, one in French and the other in Spanish. My biggest long term education goal is to continue my studies by earning a Master’s degree in Linguistics.

I feel that through the combination of my background in Global Studies with further education in Linguistics, I can set myself up for working with foreign languages and the people who speak them. I believe that working in the international field will give me more insight into a culture that I could not obtain staying in the United States. Argentina, especially, is a very interesting place for language due to the blending of cultures. The exposure to the differences will only work to further aid me in my experiences with linguistic variety and understanding the global community.

As for my career goals, working in Buenos Aires has been an essential part of my growth as a professional. I was given two opportunities to try different avenues while also living in one of the most diversely populated cities in South America, while utilizing my knowledge of the Spanish language.

Hands-on work within my field would only further cement the ideas that I want to come into fruition for my future, while allowing me to become immersed in real-life scenarios that I could only learn from in person. With Argentina being a Latin American melting pot, made up of descendents from all over the world, working in Buenos Aires has given me a profound understanding of cultural intersection, and in turn, would guide my professional development as it applies to language, education and even social issues.
