Visit for a short walk, then look more closely at the monuments: they tell different chapters of Argentine history.<\/p><h2>Why the Plaza Is Named for San Mart\u00edn<\/h2><p>Jos\u00e9 de San Mart\u00edn established the barracks of the Mounted Grenadiers here in 1812. The plaza received his name in 1878, the centenary of his birth. Its landscape evolved through successive projects, including contributions by Carlos Thays.<\/p><p>San Mart\u00edn was a central military figure in South American independence. Argentina\u2019s independence declaration, however, was made by the Congress of Tucum\u00e1n on July 9, 1816; it was not signed into existence by San Mart\u00edn after a battle in this plaza.<\/p><h2>What to Look For<\/h2><ul><li><strong>The San Mart\u00edn monument:<\/strong> the equestrian sculpture honors the general; take time to notice the surrounding sculptural groups rather than only photographing the central figure.<\/li><li><strong>The Malvinas memorial:<\/strong> approach this commemorative space respectfully. It has a different purpose from the plaza\u2019s recreational lawns.<\/li><li><strong>The landscape:<\/strong> shaded paths and changing levels offer a break from the streets of Retiro.<\/li><li><strong>The surroundings:<\/strong> the Torre Monumental stands in the nearby Plaza Fuerza A\u00e9rea Argentina, across the broader Retiro area, rather than being a monument inside Plaza San Mart\u00edn.<\/li><\/ul><h2>Plan a Retiro Walk<\/h2><p>Combine the plaza with nearby streets and architectural landmarks at a pace that leaves time to look up and read signs. If you are continuing toward a station, check your route before entering the busiest transport areas. Bring water in warm weather and keep your phone and bag secure in crowds.<\/p><p>A short visit works well between other plans; allow more time if you want to study the monuments or photograph the changing light.
