Raúl Barboza’s accordion opens a door to chamamé, a tradition strongly associated with Corrientes and Argentina’s northeast. It is a reminder that Argentine music cannot be reduced to Buenos Aires tango or rock.

Context for the Recording

Barboza developed an international career and settled in Paris in 1987. Chamamé’s cultural setting includes music, dance, gatherings and language; UNESCO recognizes the tradition as intangible cultural heritage. It should not be explained as simply an imported polka with decorative local additions.

What to Listen For

Follow the accordion melody and its interaction with the accompaniment. Listen for changes in pace and emphasis. A recording may be instrumental; your task can be to describe motion, mood and dance energy rather than translate nonexistent lyrics.

The original Mente feature’s media are retained below. A recording illustrates a musical moment; it does not promise that the artist is currently performing in Buenos Aires.
