Astor Piazzolla changed the possibilities of tango as music for attentive listening. His work gives international students a way to explore the bandoneón, ensemble writing and the relationship between tradition and experimentation.

Context for the Recording

Piazzolla’s career included work with Aníbal Troilo, study with Alberto Ginastera and Nadia Boulanger, and collaborations across musical settings. His compositions include Libertango and Adiós Nonino; different performances can reveal different details of the same piece.

What to Listen For

Notice contrasts between sustained melody and rhythmic attack. Follow the bandoneón through the ensemble and compare how a theme returns. Some recordings are instrumental, so a listening exercise can focus on form and sound rather than lyrics.
