Oscar Alemán’s guitar offers an entry into Argentine jazz beyond the familiar tango-and-rock picture. His career connects northern Argentina, Buenos Aires and an international musical world.

Context for the Recording

Born in Chaco, Alemán developed a career that included Europe and work with Josephine Baker. His return to Argentina led to further performing and recording. Rather than using a string of famous acquaintances as the whole biography, begin with the guitar itself.

What to Listen For

Listen to the rhythmic placement of a phrase, the space between notes and the way a melody changes during improvisation. If the recording is instrumental, describe the pulse and interaction rather than searching for a chorus to translate.

The Featured Recording

The original Mente feature’s media are retained below. A recording illustrates a musical moment; it does not promise that the artist is currently performing in Buenos Aires.
