This year, Buenos Aires was named the &#8220;2011 World Book Capital&#8221; by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_355\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-355\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/feria-del-libro-lectories_thumb4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-355\" title=\"Feria del libro\" src=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/feria-del-libro-lectories_thumb4.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/feria-del-libro-lectories_thumb4.jpg 419w, https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/feria-del-libro-lectories_thumb4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-355\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Readers browse through books at the International Book Fair<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This honor is understandable considering the incredible events in Buenos Aires year round which are dedicated to authors, books, reading and bookstores. Every year on April 23rd, the city hosts a vibrant celebration for World Book Day which often occurs around the same time as Buenos Aires&#8217;\u00a0 famous, annual International Book Fair, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.el-libro.org.ar\/internacional\/\"><em>Feria Internacional del Libro<\/em><\/a>. The <em>Feria del Libro<\/em> hosts authors from all over Argentina, South America, and the world for two weeks&#8217; worth of book and poetry readings, signings, and lectures on literature of all kinds for people of all ages.<\/p>\n<p>Another literary celebration took place a couple weeks ago, when Buenos Aires celebrated the rich history of its bookstores, <em>librer\u00edas<\/em>, and their contributions to the literary and academic culture of the city. The event represented the city\u2019s commitment to promoting books and reading, especially for children and teens.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_361\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-361\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/buenos-airess-librerc3ada-el-ateneo-grand-splendid.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-361\" title=\"Buenos-Aires's-Librer\u00eda-El-Ateneo-Grand-Splendid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/buenos-airess-librerc3ada-el-ateneo-grand-splendid.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/buenos-airess-librerc3ada-el-ateneo-grand-splendid.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/buenos-airess-librerc3ada-el-ateneo-grand-splendid-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A picture of this place is absolutely worth a thousand words and a visit will leave you speechless<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Buenos Aires is home to hundreds of bookstores, but undoubtedly the most notable is <strong>El Ateneo Grand Splendid<\/strong>. In 2008, British periodical, <em>The Guardian<\/em>, honored El Ateneo with second place among the 10 best bookstores in the world. This bookstore boasts a remarkable history which enriches its stunning and truly unique ambiance.<\/p>\n<p>Situated Barrio Norte, El Ateneo was designed by the architects Per\u00f3 and Torres Armengol and originally opened as a theater, <em>Teatro Gran Splendid,<\/em> in May of 1919. The building features ceiling frescoes and ornate sculptures and carvings by renowned Italian artists and sculptors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_360\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-360\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/libreria_el_ateneo_grand_splendid.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-360\" title=\"libreria_el_ateneo_grand_splendid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/libreria_el_ateneo_grand_splendid.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/libreria_el_ateneo_grand_splendid.jpg 430w, https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/libreria_el_ateneo_grand_splendid-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beautiful art and architecture bring this bookstore a seemingly magical onda (vibe)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The theater had a seating capacity of 1,050, and staged a variety of performances, including appearances by famous tango artists like Carlos Gardel, Francisco Canaro, Roberto Firpo and Ignacio Corsini.<\/p>\n<p>In the late 1920s, the theater was converted into a movie theater, and in 1929 it showed the first sound films\u00a0 in Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>The opulent former theater was leased by Grupo Ilhsa, who owns El Ateneo, Yenny booksellers and the El Ateneo publishing house, in February of 2000. Soon after, the theater underwent renovation and was converted into a book and music store.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_353\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-353\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/800px-ateneo_grand_splendid-interior-tm1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-353\" title=\"Ateneo_Grand_Splendid-interior\" src=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/800px-ateneo_grand_splendid-interior-tm1.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/800px-ateneo_grand_splendid-interior-tm1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.menteargentina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/800px-ateneo_grand_splendid-interior-tm1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Theater boxes where patrons can read and enjoy a view of the bookstore<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over a million people walk through El Ateneo Grand Splendid\u2019s doors annually, making it the busiest bookstore in Buenos Aires. There are cozy chairs scattered throughout the store, including seats in its glamorous theater boxes. Once reserved only for the Buenos Aires elite, customers can now sit in these luxurious boxes and enjoy books before purchase. There is also a lovely caf\u00e9 on the back of what was once the stage, which is the perfect place to grab a <em>caf\u00e9 con leche<\/em> on a rainy day.
