A useful internship combines learning with work that the host actually needs. You do not need to arrive knowing everything, but you should understand your responsibilities and know whom to ask when something is unclear.

1. Set Expectations Early

Ask about tasks, hours, supervision and the learning goals for the placement. Agree on how to raise a question and when to review progress.

2. Observe the Working Culture

Notice how people communicate and organize their day. Ask about unfamiliar practices rather than assuming one workplace represents an entire country.

3. Ask Clear Questions

Explain what you have understood, what you have tried and where you need guidance. Clarification is part of doing responsible work.

4. Take Initiative Within Your Role

Suggest a useful task or improvement, but obtain approval before changing a process, publishing information or handling sensitive material.

5. Build Professional Relationships

Listen to colleagues, be reliable and respect their time. Treat introductions as relationships, not only as future references.

6. Document Your Learning

Keep notes about skills and feedback without copying confidential information. Ask what you may include in a portfolio or résumé.

7. Review and Finish Well

Discuss what you contributed, ask for feedback and hand over work clearly. Leave the host with usable materials rather than unfinished loose ends.

International Placements Add Another Layer

Language, commute and unfamiliar routines can affect your first weeks. Give yourself time to adapt and raise practical difficulties with your supervisor or coordinator. An internship should not require silently accepting unsafe or inappropriate tasks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if there is not enough work?

Ask your supervisor about priorities and propose a relevant task within the agreed role.

Can I publish examples from the placement?

Obtain permission and respect confidentiality before using work in a portfolio or public post.
