Due to its abundant access to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Education_in_Argentina\">education<\/a>,\u00a0there is no shortage of doctors. Oftentimes the facilities are not as well maintained as the ones you might find in North America or Europe, especially given the frequent financial crises, but it is not a reflection of the quality of care. Healthcare is concentrated in urban areas,\u00a0mainly Buenos Aires, and quality care along with the most up to date\u00a0technologies will be much more readily available in the city. It is common for people who live in other areas\u00a0of Argentina to travel to Buenos Aires when they need to have important medical procedures performed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In Argentina, healthcare is significantly cheaper\u00a0than in most North American or European\u00a0countries. This paired with its well-educated medical personnel has\u00a0created a space for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argentinaindependent.com\/socialissues\/urbanlife\/the-new-medical-tourism-mecca\/\">medical tourism<\/a> in Buenos Aires. Many foreigners\u00a0come to the city to have surgeries- plastic surgery being the most frequent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>How the healthcare system works in\u00a0Argentina\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Argentina&#8217;s healthcare system is broken up into three different sectors:<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-paragraph-padding-4\">\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ccffcc;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; background-color: #ffffff;\">Public Sector:<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0Covering about 50% of the population, this sector provides free healthcare to Argentine citizens with some charges made for medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">Private Sector:<\/span><\/span> This sector allows the option for patients to pay for the entire cost of their medical coverage. The facilities tend to be better maintained with more up to date technologies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ccffcc;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Obra Social\/ Mutual plans:<\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>These plans are distributed by trade unions and covers a large portion of the medical costs- both inpatient and outpatient. A fixed rate is paid by this insurance and anything over that fixed rate is paid by the patient. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\"><strong>Our Recommendations:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/menteargentina.com\/6\/Short-Programs\">Short Programs<\/a> (Less than 3 months)<\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">For students with programs that last less than three months it is most convenient to use a travelers insurance for any medical need that might pop up.\u00a0 Many times credit card companies offer travelers insurance as a free service. If not, the leading travelers insurance agencies are: (<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.travelers.com\/\">Travelers<\/a>, <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldnomads.com\/\">WorldNomads<\/a>, <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.assist-card.com\/\">AssistCard<\/a>). It is also a good idea to check with your local insurance to see if they provide coverage abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">Long Programs (More than 3 months)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For students with programs that last more than three months, we recommend local medical coverage (here in Argentina it is known as \u201cobra social\u201d). This covers all of the medical costs of an emergency and gives you the opportunity to elect the best hospitals, healthcare professionals, and specialists. The cost of local coverage is USD $80 per month for anyone up to the age of 26 and USD $100 per month for anyone over the age of 27. If you need assistance with getting medical insurance, you can pay us in cash upon your arrival and we will organize everything to ensure that you are covered starting the first day of your program.
