Song of the week: Charly García

-

Charly Garcia is an icon in the rock world, and a god in the Argentine rock world.

He grew up in Buenos Aires proper, in Caballito, in an upper-middle class family.   Because his mother was a producer at a radio station that played mainly folklore, Charly was exposed to a lot of music as a child . His inclination towards music was recognized at a young age when he told a prominent folklore musician that his guitar was out of tune while at a radio station session. At that point, his mother realized that he was gifted with perfect pitch and sent him to study piano to hone in on his talent.  Charly began teaching piano at the age of 12 and continued to use the piano as his primary instrument throughout his career.  One year later, at 13, Charly discovered the Beatles, opening his musical aperture and kickstarting his fascination with rock.    This baby genius carried his talents and innovative character into his music for decades to come, influencing the development of latinamerican music through his various bands, collaborations, and solo projects.

This song in particular is off of Charly’s second solo album, Modern Clix. It is considered to be one of the most important albums in Argentine rock and was the first to utilize a drum machine. His array of musical influences can’t be ignored as you enjoy this rock tune with an 80’s salsa flare.
