Facturas, Mate, & Medialunas: Your Essential Guide to Breakfast in Buenos Aires (2025)

-

One thing study abroad students and interns often notice is that breakfast (desayuno) in Buenos Aires is a drastically different animal than many North Americans and Europeans are accustomed to.

In Argentina, breakfast is a light, sweet, and quick affair—often just a café con leche and a medialuna (sweet croissant-like pastry), or a quick mate and some tostados con queso crema (toast with cream cheese). Argentinians save their appetite for the famous late dinners!

Ready to immerse yourself in the local culinary scene? You can learn to bake these very treats with the Mente Argentina Culinary Program in Buenos Aires!

🥐 Facturas: The Argentine Morning Sweet Treat

Facturas (literally translated as “bill” or “receipt”) is the genre Argentinians use to describe the delicious selection of pastries found in every local panadería (bakery). These tasty treats are best for students on the go: hop out of bed, run down the street, and grab a quick delicious breakfast before your Spanish Classes in Buenos Aires start!

While all will twist your mouth into a medialuna-shaped sonrisa (smile), here are the essential types to know:

Medialuna de Manteca

The classic “half-moon” (croissant), made with butter. Sweeter, glossier, and denser than its French cousin.

The most popular choice, often served with a coffee.

Medialuna de Grasa

Made with oil/fat instead of butter. Less sweet, flakier, and slightly more savory—perfect for dipping in coffee.

The savory choice. Ask for tres medialunas for a typical serving!

Bola de Fraile

Literally “Friar’s Ball.” A round, deep-fried doughnut, usually filled with dulce de leche or crema pastelera, and dusted with sugar.

Dangerously delicious, this is the Argentinian version of a jelly donut.

Cañoncito

A cylinder-shaped pastry made with flaky puff pastry, generously filled with dulce de leche or crema pasatelera.

A must-try for serious caramel lovers.

Tortita Negra

A small, dark, round pastry with a caramelized top made of dark sugar.

A unique, exclusively Argentinian pastry with a crunchy, sweet crust.

Churro

Fried dough pastry, often associated with Spain/Mexico, but here it is almost always filled with warm dulce de leche.

Best enjoyed with a café or a submarino (hot milk with a chocolate bar melted inside).

🍯 The Essential Fillings

  • Dulce de Leche: This thick, sticky, sweet caramel is an Argentine obsession. It goes in, on, and with everything.
  • Crema Pastelera: A rich, vanilla-flavored pastry cream, often used to balance the sweetness of the facturas.
  • Dulce de Membrillo: A light red jam made from quince fruit, common as a sweet and slightly tart filling for pastries.

Breakfast Culture & New Trends (2025)

While the quick café con leche y medialunas is the traditional standard, the culinary scene in Buenos Aires is dynamic.

  • The Rise of Brunch (Brunchear): Influenced by international visitors and local trends, brunch (eggs, avocado toast, granola) is now very popular on weekends, especially in Palermo. Places like Café Crespín (Villa Crespo) or La Alacena Pastificio & Salumeria (Palermo Viejo) offer heartier, savory options that are perfect after a late night out.
  • The Coffee Renaissance: The city is full of excellent modern coffee shops (like Cuervo Café or Bicho) that cater to the younger crowd with high-quality brews and comfortable spaces for working or studying (for more suggestions, check our Coffee Shops blog post).
  • Yerba Mate: While less common in cafes (though mate tasting events are a rising novelty!), mate is the national infusion, often enjoyed at home, in the park, or at the office. If your host family offers you mate, accept it! It’s a sign of friendship and a true cultural experience.

📍 Where to Find Your Facturas (Panadería Recommendations)

Every barrio has a great panadería near your Mente Argentina accommodation, but for a special treat, consider:

  • Artiaga (Saavedra): Old-school classic. An amazing selection of facturas and their internationally awarded savory panettone made with Malbec flour.
  • La Antigua Belgrano (Belgrano): A beloved institution. Everything is good! From their daily bread to their incredible facturas. This is their only location, a true neighborhood treasure.
  • Atelier Fuerza (Multiple locations): A modern artisan. A contemporary favorite praised for excellent, crusty sourdough baked goods and a modern twist on classics.
