Camber's experience with Mente Argentina

Camber, from Asheville, North Carolina, and a student at UNC Asheville, spent a semester at the University of Belgrano taking sociology and politics classes in English, a relief while Spanish was not yet proficient. Camber found the professors very good, some better than back home, and was fascinated by a completely different method of teaching, shared with classmates from Germany, Canada, the Netherlands and elsewhere. Having done a homestay before, Camber chose an apartment this time, and Mente provided a clean, well-located place with a great view of the city, almost nicer than home, shared with two German students rather than Americans. Mente organized activities in and around the city, from tango nights to a day in Tigre walking along the river and taking a boat ride, and helped with the logistics of independent trips, down to finding the bus station. Camber praises Argentina's comfortable long-distance buses and recommends researching the city's customs beforehand, especially a nightlife that runs from three until six or seven in the morning.

I'm Camber. I'm from Asheville, North Carolina. I go to UNC Asheville in the States, and I studied abroad through Mente Argentina. I did a semester at the University of Belgrano, taking sociology and political classes in English. It was very nice being in class in English, because before I came to Buenos Aires my Spanish was not proficient enough. The professors were very good, some even better than mine in the United States. It is very interesting seeing how people are taught in Argentina, because it was a completely different method of teaching, and it is very interesting getting that perspective on how people learn in different countries. There was a large portion of American students and German students, but it was nice taking classes with a lot of Europeans and people from all over the world, Canadians, Germans, people from the Netherlands. It is a very good mix of people. Mente was very nice. In the past I have done a homestay, and I elected to live in an apartment in Buenos Aires. They provided me with a great apartment, almost nicer than my apartment back in the States, with a great view of the city, a great location, and a very nice, clean place. That was very helpful. It was also very nice living with two other German girls, not living with Americans, and living with other foreign exchange students. That was a fun part of the experience. Mente organized activities outside of the city and in the city. We had tango nights. If we wanted to learn tango, we got to. We went outside of the city to El Tigre, walked along the river, and did a boat ride. Mente was also very helpful if I wanted to organize a trip outside of Buenos Aires. For example, they helped with the logistics and what I needed to do, and where the bus station was. Argentina is very nice because they have a very good bus system if you are traveling long distances. It is very comfortable. Before coming here, I would recommend doing a lot of research on the city and the customs. You have to be accustomed, if you are into the nightlife, to going out at three in the morning and staying out until six or seven. It is a very different culture, but very interesting to be immersed in for four months.
