Mente Argentina
Laura's Volunteer Experience in Buenos Aires
Laura's experience with Mente Argentina
Laura, 18, volunteered with Mente Argentina for two and a half weeks at a center for children coming off the streets, where they receive meals and clothing and, during the school year, classes. Getting to know the children, some of whom had lived on the streets from as young as ten, and hearing their very different stories was quite an experience for her. Beyond volunteering, Mente gave her many opportunities to go out and explore the city, which she likes a lot. She found Buenos Aires full of culture and history, with something new around every corner, whether trying tango for the first time or walking past the Casa Rosada.

Hi, my name is Laura. I'm 18 years old, and I volunteered with Mente Argentina for two and a half weeks. What I did was, I went to a place called La Maza, which means the life raft. Basically, all these kids were coming off the streets, and they would come there, and they could feed them and give them clothes, and during the school year they have classes there, because these kids have been on the streets. One of them was out on the streets when he was ten years old. These kids have really different stories. It was quite an experience getting to know them all. Apart from that, Mente gave me lots of opportunities to go out in the city. I like it a lot. There is lots and lots of culture here. Basically, wherever you turn you are going to find something new, whether you are experiencing tango or tango classes for the first time, or you are walking by the Pink House, which was originally painted with cow's blood. There is just so much history behind everything.
